I've heard people say that I've never seen a scope I didn't like. And
to be fair... that is sort of true. I find things that I like in
everything. But there are many scopes that I would personally not
own. Many have been listed in this thread..... (excepting a 14" SCT
that I am begrudgingly using over the next couple of months... don't
ask why).

Always get the best you can afford. You might also consider a nice
little refractor at the price point you're talking about. I like
Albert's idea best though. Design and build your own.
