Re: ngc4223 confusion resolved

I'll try to clarify a bit but it is a confusing situation. There are
two galaxies we're talking about that are 8' apart oriented WNW -
ESE. In most modern galaxy catalogues, the western galaxy (II 137)
is listed as NGC 4241 (the one my notes describe) and the fainter
eastern galaxy as IC 3115. But since William Herschel discovered
both galaxies (John Herschel botched this), his catalogue numbers
should apply to the galaxies based on historical precedence. So, the
western galaxy (II 137) should be catalogued as NGC 4223 and the
eastern galaxy (III 480) as NGC 4241. NED uses the historically
correct numbers as well as amateur software based on the NGC/IC project.

I think I'll reword that confusing sentence as "The galaxy described
above is misidentified as N4241 in modern catalogues. It forms a
pair with IC 3115 (the "real" N4241)."
