You're right on Tony!
The thing to do is to jump on the Clouds just as soon as it get's dark and then work to the East as the night moves on.
One remarkable object that I saw lying flat on the ground with my dob down in the dust at the Texas Star Party was the Pencil Nebula in Vela. Have always wanted to see it high in the Sky!
