IMHO you guys are encouraging Jake to "look at the wrong end of the
telescope."
The problem with youngsters using microscopes is not merely image
size and magnification.
They must be able to view something easily. Most lack the
sophistication to position their heads in the narrow cone of
viewability of standard microscopes until they get near high school
age. Indeed, many adults find the narrow cone of viewability (in
width AND depth) a frustration. Kids quickly lose interest.
Museums and teaching venues face this problem often, so a range of
low-power + wide viewing field microscopes has been developed. The
eye lens on these buggers is almost five inches in diameter and depth
of field amazing. I have installed three of them at Lindsay Wildlife
Museum in Walnut Creek for viewing insects and such. These are not
cheap; but what the heck why not use some of that stimulus money Jake
got. ;-} And make him a hero with his boss.
Jake, I will get you the brand, model number and contact info. Will
forward it to you upon receipt. Sending you an offline email with
more info.
