I've been to the Pic du Midi observatory (back in 2000) The view is
incredible from up there (you can see 200 kms each way, that is 1% of
the earth perimeter) I didn't get to observe (there is an astronomical
association that maintains and uses a 24" scope though) but I've heard
it is one of the best sites in continental Europe (although light
pollution is slowly becoming a problem)
