The gate at Barcroft is closed at the end of the road. You can set up
scopes there as long as you have a way of leveling your telescope.
There isn't a flat spot to beg for. I did set up about a mile back down
from Barcroft gate at Limestone Peak which is at a crest in the road.
There is enough flat areas on either side of the road. I did learn
however that I do not handle altitude well at all with partial lung
capacity. I even had a couple of bottles of oxygen to take hits from
until they ran out. The altitude was 11,500. I did notice that my
visual acuity improved whenever I took the oxygen therapy. Lasted for
about 20 minutes after a couple minutes dragging on the oxygen. I have
no problem at Grandview campground however. I make it there every
year. I have had better conditions overall at Grandview compared to
Limestone Peak. It can get really windy on the ridge. I still remember
the best skies ever at Barcroft at 12,500 with a 28" Dob. You seemingly
can reach up with your hand and touch the stars.
