FWIW -- I've had the NSOG Volume 3 for about a week and would highly
recommend it to anyone planning a trip to southern latitudes. The
format is identical to the original two volumes with 375 pages packed
with descriptions, sketches and small finder charts of the southern
constellations. The coverage is very complete with hundreds of
galaxies, clusters and planetaries not in the NGC as well as a couple
of thousand NGC/IC entries. The Magellanic Clouds are covered in
detail with nearly 50 pages of descriptions devoted to the LMC
alone. Enough to satisfy any hard-core observer, but probably too
dry reading for newbies. Only minor complaint is a few typos and
some of the descriptions are a bit too optimistic about what can be
seen by the average observer and might be discouraging.
Only constellations south of the first two volumes are included (with
the exception of Centaurus) so the vast majority of objects are below
-50 degrees dec and *NOT* visible from our latitude. Although it's
titled "The Southern Skies" you won't find Sagittarius, Scorpius,
etc. as these are already in Volume 2 so there's no need to buy this
volume if you're only planning to observe north of +35 degrees
latitude. But it's definitely coming along with me (along with
Hartung/Frew/Malin's Astronomical Objects for Southern Telescopes) on
my next trip downunder.
Steve
P.S. I have no observations/affiliation with this volume.
