Wouldn't Tioga pass in Yosemite get you as high (9941 feet) and a lot closer
than Bumpass? It might get a bit pof a light dome from Reno or Sacramento,
but its pretty dark up there.

Kennedy Meadows/Sonora Pass on 108 out of Sonora is also a lot closer and
gets you to 9600 feet.

For that matter Glacier Point in Yosemiteis 7200' and what, 4 hrs from San
Jose?
