That's factually incorrect. CalStar began as a TAC event, allowing clubs to participate as
sponsors. TAC was to be the organizer and not any particular club. Invitations to participate
(by having its name associated) were extended to any club wishing to. The SJAA participation was
a result of Jay Freeman suggesting once attendance expanded beyond a small group of friends,
liability insurance would be advisable. The SJAA, mostly through its then president, Dave North,
agreed to become an official sponsor, allowing CalStar to operate under the club's insurance
policy. That was to be the total extent of SJAA (or any club) involvement in planning and
operation of CalStar. For reasons I won't go into, it did not turn out that way... CalStar
quickly became an SJAA event, which is remains to this day.
