It's my understanding that CalStar is an SJAA sponsored event open to all it's members and their families as stated by Rob Hawley last year. See: http://observers.org/tac.mailing.list/2007/Sep/0764.html
However, it does appear many Bay Area sponsored events are geared primarily for undisturbed adult viewing. I guess I'm confused by the thought of attending a large star party with an expectation of not being disturbed by speakers, activities, public, kids, etc. A "reasonable sized get together" is possible through private events coordinated amongst like minded friends.
I like the way the Oregon Star Party (http://www.oregonstarparty.org/) has positioned itself and I plan on attending next year. Anyone aware of similar events on the west coast?

One smaller event. Shorter drive to still good conditions. No speakers.
Park facilities. No activities. No public event. Just a simple,
reasonable sized get together - Calstar.
Calstar is a simple, serious observing event for observers.
