Don't worry Darrell. Mum's the word! It's just between you and me and 500 TACO's!

  Dennis,

Just don't tell my wife how women are attracted to my natural history knowledge ;-) The Belding's Ground Squirrels form a major winter food supply for the Ferruginous Hawks that frequent the area then.

"Pronghorn and Belding's Ground Squirrels". Wow! Darrell you are not only the Bird Man of TSP but also the resident John Muir of TAC!

Driving across the great American SW desert with you was truly an enlightening experience.

Not much about flora, fauna and geographical items of interest that you don't know.

Looking forward to doing it again!

Elevation at Lava Beds ranges from 4000' to 5700' above sea level. The area around the lava tubes themselves is hilly, with Pinyon Pine and juniper, which are typical Great Basin Desert vegetation. Much of the surrounding area is flatter sagebrush plains, with Pronghorn and Belding's Ground Squirrels.

I've been to Lava Beds. You have to drive up a bit to get there from
Klamath. I recall looking at views down into the valley, the valley so low. Maybe
1000 feet or so. Just guessing.
