a further update from him:

the bottom of the road is DEEP sand, then the next stretch is STEEP and
rocky. the top is quite reasonable :D

he asked if we'd been to 'look out mountain' but i'm not sure where that
is. google isn't helping much, A) thats common, and B )there''s some
place in georgia thats famous. I asked for clarification...
