A trip sometime in June sounds like a good idea...
This looks like an OUTRAGOUS location... personally, I wouldn't hesitate to
spend a week in a place like that (with or without a scope ;-)
However, I have concerns about its suitability for a "large star party"
site... I'm just playing devil's advocate here... feel free to shoot these
concerns down (like anyone would hesitate!).
1) That kind of altitude can be tough on people. Although I've never been
affected by altitude, I have friends who have gotten extremely ill above
8000 feet.
2) It's a good couple/few hours away from services... in the event of an
emergency, this could be a real problem (it's a long 12 miles from Bishop).
In the event of automobile trouble, it'll be an incredible (and very
expensive) pain. I'll remind everyone that we've had both automobile
breakdowns (mine included) and medical emergencies at Shingletown. That all
being said, it's no more remote than Table Mountain...
3) What is the average snow pack at that location? This is a dry year; in a
wet year is it even accessible at mid-summer? I guess it could always
become an August venue if this is a problem... We would also need to think
about preparation for summer snow storms. I've been buried under snowfall
in August in high sierra back-country, on the east side of the range no
less... it could easily happen here as well.
4) It's alot farther from the Bay Area than our other venues. But I think
Sterngold is right... it'll be alot closer for our friends in Southern
California.
