I've been backpacking at 10 to 11 thousand feet in the Sierra. It takes me
a couple days to get used to the elevation. For us flat landers, it is
difficult to do very much physical activity and you are sleepy most of the
time. But it isn't too much of a big deal. I don't think that it is risky
until you get up to like 14 thousand feet or so.
