Remembering CalStar 2001

Hard to believe how fast the days go...

With all the remembrances of the September 11th attacks in the media,
I have two vivid memories that stand out....

One was that moment of disbelief on the morning of the 11th. I had
just turned TV and was shocked at the accident, the disaster, that
just took place in NYC. How could a commercial jet run into The World
Trade Center? Then as the second jet approached, that horrible
realization of what was actually taking place.

The other was September 13, the first day of CalStar 2001. Arriving
at Lake San Antonio, pulling into the overflow campgrounds, the tents
and shades were a sea of American flags. Many people stayed home,
certainly, glued to the TV, in mourning, worried about family, worried
about more attacks. But many went to CalStar, to be with their astro
friends, to get away from the depressing events, or to simply not let
the attacks stop them.

What was most noticeable at CalStar those nights was the lack of air
traffic. It was incredibly odd, actually eerie, to be out observing
those three nights, without a single aircraft in the skies.

I'm glad I was at CalStar that year. Being with friends, doing
something I love, was the right choice.

I'm looking forward to CalStar next week. I'm sure we'll think about
today when we're there. Hard to believe five years have gone by...
