Steens Mountain was the site of the Oregon Star Party before it moved
to its present location in the Ochoco National Forest. Here is the

The founders of OSP (Chuck and Judy Dethloff) still use the site with
friends. At SSP two summers ago they invited me up, saying it is
unbelievably dark, but it seems a very long drive (OSP was long
enough!).
