big dobs advice

I went through this exact same exercise and dialogue on TAC about a
year ago.

Here's my advice:

Measure your car. In what configuration will the scope fit?
Look at the weight of the components. How much do you have to lift at
any one time?
If you want more aperture get the largest scope you're willing to haul
around and setup. A scope should not be a deterrent to viewing.

If you already have a 14" scope, a 15" may be an almost imperceptible
increase.
An 18" should make the dimmer stuff easier to see.

Look at used telescopes. You'll not find a better bargain in large
aperture than the used ones
that pop up on Astromart on a regular basis. There was a 20"
starsplitter on there just the other day.

All that said, I do believe in buying local, and supporting good design
and craftsmanship.
Albert's design, and Michelle's work makes an excellent combination.

That's what I finally chose.

I do love my Plettstone 18", even if it does NOT fit in my car in the
manner I had envisioned.
(I ordered the scope, then I measured my car. ;-) )

Clear skies,

Bill
