Whooo Hooo! Leaving on a jet plane from SFO for San Jose Costa Rica a week from Saturday. Heading down to a hotel/ranch on the Gulf of Nicoya at 10 degrees North and 84 degrees West.
Finally finished my telescope and binocular observing lists for the upcoming Sky & Telescope Costa Rica Southern Skies Fiesta along with Steve Gottlieb, Rob Hawley and others. This is my first astronomical trip to the Southern Skies so I'm really looking forward to it.
My telescope list is comprised of around 70 must-see objects that Steve observed last year along with around 55 other objects culled from the AL Southern Skies Telescope list and Southern Caldwell objects. I printed out 3 part finder charts (naked eye, 9x50 finder and low power eyepiece) from Skytools along with a big view from Megastar. That way, if for some reason my laptop doesn't work, I'm still good to go!
The binocular list is comprised of 73 objects from the AL Southern Skies binocular list plus another 52 from Phil Harrington's Touring the Universe with Binoculars book.
I'm going down this weekend to pick up my rental travel scope from Kevin at Scopes 4 Rent. It's one of the new 10 inch pop-up carbon fiber dobs that stows in cargo and weighs just 20 pounds! Also bringing my 10x70 fujinon binoculars/nebula filters and my Grandview Binocular mount.
Will file an extensive OR when I return. Looks like all the stuff I want to see will be favorably placed other than Tucana and Pavo. Hmmm. Maybe a reason to hit the Lake Titicaca Southern Skies Star Party in late July of 2007!!
Adios Amigos,
