You might want to try a filter on Mars. You need to cut down the
overall brightness to see more detail, in anything but a very small
scope. Even a simple "moon" (neutral density) filter works. Also, you
can buy relatively inexpensive color filters (check Orion in Cupertino
or mail order). These both cut down the brightness and can sometimes
enhance contrast in various ways. I often use a red filter on Mars.

OOOO. That's even worse than what I called it, I think. Or maybe not
-- perhaps Rich will tell us which one of us insulted him/his equipment
more ;-). (For the record, I called it a "finder" -- not original to
me.)
