The Beastmaster today went -

... which is sadly ironic at this point, Richard. After posting about
this winter's details, I heard thru CL Price, the head ranger, later
this afternoon. Here's the updated latest, short, not sweet.
December, January and February, Fremont Peak State Park will close at
sundown. The downhill gate by Doe Flat will be locked at sundown. The
only access for observing for those 3 months will be thru FPOA.
Further details will be coming soon thru a news release from CL.
Nice, huh? I'm not official in any capacity here, so I get to be
candid. This clearly changes my view of the management at the Park.
The frontline rangers at the Peak have always been helpful to us
observers. Management often hasn't. This is sad for us all from a lot
of angles. Most of all I think of how people like Paul Mortfield, Bob
Czerwinski, Jay Freeman, Robert Hoyle, Jay Freeman, Steve Gottlieb
have been going to the Peak for decades, long before TAC was even
thought of. It's our place.
Two practical points. This is for 3 months. Campgrounds and astro
access will re-open in the spring. A more practical point is that CL
Price is the head ranger for SJB, the Peak, Monterey and Coe now. If
people really want to make a mess, we could have Coe and the Peak go
the way of Mt. Diablo. Really weird situation where they're our parks
but we don't write the access regs.
We'll have more specific news soon. Past that, I really don't know
what to recommend at this point. The BLM land at Panoche is beckoning.
Yours in Jump Cannon,
DDK
