I still have my old Scientific American book showing how to make a few kinds of
lasers, e.g. dye lasers, CO2 lasers and nitrogen pulse lasers. Of course,
a home-made laser of one of those varieties will fill a small tabletop, so
they don't exactly make good pointers.
If you can make your own dob, you can make your own laser -
in either case, it's just a couple of mirrors. :-)
