Hi
The shiny stuff is a relatively thin insulation. It is basically bubble
wrap with an overlay of reflective something (mylar, aluminum, etc)..
There are 2 types.
One has the shiny on both sides, the Other has it only on one side. I
found the 2 sided stuff at OSH hardware. The single sided at Home Depot.
I made car window reflectors out of it. Much more efficient than the
ordinary types you see.
Also, it can be easily formed and glued together with ordinary clear
packing tape. I have a scope cover that has persisted for 3 years. It
keeps the scope cool in otherwise very hot weather. I am amazed at how
long it has lasted without any repair.
I have never seen any residue from it but OTOH, I always have covers on
the optics under it.
