You're right. In an ideal world, it would all just work. Sadly, I still need to
know enough to figure out which coverage map to use. :-(
I hope the newer networks continue to be improved in rural areas, because in a
couple of years, analog will start being phased out. What this means is that if
you go to a site now where you can roam and make a call, it will likely
stop working some time in early 2006 - practically eons from now.
