For what its worth SkyMap Pro uses a database.
The observatory log is saved to a disk when an entry is made.

That was an improvement that corrected some bad behavior in previous
versions. It used to use Jet, but now uses a private database. In version 10
he does not fully exploit this so expect more improvements in version 11.
I still believe in backups and "save early, save often".
