Sky Publishing used to sell a gauge (but alas no more).
It's a plastic strip with pairs of tiny holes at distances varying from
1 to 9mm in steps of 0.5mm.
The design appeared in the May 92 S&T.
I have a rather poor photocopy of the page; it also suggested copying
and cutting it out, and using a pin to poke out the holes.
I could scan it if anyone is interested, but it would take but 10
minutes
with a good ruler and a pin to design your own.
