That was a great observing report!
I loved the 'adventure' quality of it - you were on a quest, and you would
not be denied. It evoked the questing spirit that characterizes some of the
most memorable observing sessions.
Kudos, too, on making the ground board work. That sounds like an inspired
bit of improvisation.
Your QSO project is exactly the sort of thing that I hope to do when I get
a scope in the 18" range. In fact, it's part of why I joined FPOA. Although
I haven't started using the 30" scope yet, quasar hunting sounds like a
great project for that scope. Other FPOA folks may have done just that.
So far, I've managed to bag two pre-solar quasars with my 10" dob. Congrats
on bagging something that's REALLY pre-solar!

nutshelled a large part of amateur astronomy.
