I can clarify. I was referring to my H2500 list, which is sorted by
constellation, then diminishing mag. Some constellations, Hydra comes to
mind immediately, cover a huge area in RA. I can have to mag 13.5 objects
next to each other on my list, but they can then be 3 hours apart in
RA. This means doing precisely what Bob Jardine found difficult - jumping
all over the sky while proceeding down the list. Yes, one could look down
the list to see if there are any objects close to the one just observed,
but in the 2500 there can be a hundred targets, so it becomes cumbersome.
I like my current approach - 2 hours of RA sorted S to N.
