AT&T runs three, count 'em three networks in this area. UMTS (WCDMA@1900, 3G),
GSM on 1900 and 850MHz, and TDMA. If you're in the country, one may work well,
and another one work poorly. AT&T in their infinite wisdom, doesn't allow
"normal" GSM accounts to roam onto TDMA or analog, which is why AT&T GSM is a
poor choice for service in some rural area. Sprint and verizon phones allow
analog roaming, so they work almost everywhere, albeit with degraded service
off their CDMA2000 home networks.

I have a prepaid TDMA/Analog phone that I thow $10 in airtime onto every 3
months that I only use while observing. My regular phone is turned off, and
only a few people have the TDMA #, and they understand that it's not for casual
use.

So, if somone wants to claim that their phone works at an observing site, it
would be helpful if they stated wether they were roaming, the network and
carrier, etc...
