Keep in mind that you'd do well to have an AC sourced power supply or a
bigger battery than what fits in your laser pointer. Most of the small
laser pointers suck juice pretty quickly.

I've actually tried using a 650 nm (red) laser to turn off the lights in
my neighborhood, but they wouldn't respond. Could have been the angle or
the distance. IIRC, the photocell was on the top on the light that I was
most interested in turning off.
I'm all ears about the appropriate technique.

I also wrote several letters to the city of San Jose to complain
(politely) about light trespass and ask for better shielding, but I've
heard nothing back. I did manage to get the email addr of somebody there
who was in charge and I only received one reply from him stating that if
they put in better shielding for me, everybody would want it. Well,
yeah!! What's the problem with that? :-)
