Jeff adds some good points. The claim is that the UTI scope and its case
are carry on size, but I added the question to my list for them.

Thanks for the references Jeff. I am holding out for an 8" dob scope. Size
has been the real killer. All of the commercial portable scope before the
UTI (including the teleport and lightbox) are both too large. Padding and
the airline size limits constrain the glass part of the scope to be no more
44" (h+d+w). 40" would be safer. The scope from the latest S&T is the best
candidate for a prototype build-by-me design if I can figure out how to
    collapse the trusses.

All this makes be very impressed with Jay's scope.

Thanks - I have exchanged some Email with Mark off the list. The 8" scope
is not currently on the web site, but is definitely a candidate subject to
    the size constraints.
