Sorry to resurrect this thread, but one thing strikes me as being rather
odd. For years the Mt. Diablo Observatory Association (MDOA) has been
raising funds and accepting grants (as well as constructing a scope) for an
observatory to be placed on Mt. Diablo. There has been no mention of
concessions, going to bid, etc. from Mt. Diablo State Park. The ongoing
assumption is that the MDOA will manage the observatory.... end of story. I
have to wonder what is different about Fremont Peak. Both are State Parks,
both have liability issues, neither are particularly brimming with
enthusiasm over astronomy, and both have non-profit associations managing
the observatory (or process of building one in MDOA's case).
