Hi all,
First a little history. About a year ago I started up DarkHorizons as my
own web site and included maps and information about popular TAC sites. As
some of you know this initially caused quite a stir on TAC. <pause for
dramatic effect>
These days DarkHorizons has become quite a bit more than just a personal
site with a bunch of maps on it. Those of you on TAC-imaging have seen it
become a popular hosting service for several CCD imagers from TAC, and a few
others from as far away as New York. (there are even some really nice images
to be found there too!)
There are a dozen of us, each with our own sites, and always room for more
people to join. You don't need to be an imager have a site either. If you
just want to set up a general interest astronomy site then that is just as
welcome.
The site still has all the original maps and information resources that it
has always had, but the focus has shifted away from that to providing a
place where amateur astronomers and hobbyists can set up a website without
having tons of silly pop-up ads or cryptic urls from providers that can
unexpectedly disappear quicker then Wynona Rider can steal a pair of shoes.
The object is simple - promote the hobby.
The offer is also simple. If you want to set up an astronomy website but
don't like popup ads or other nonsense you get from free services, you can
set up your site on DarkHorizons. Your url would be
www.darkhorizons.org/~yourname and you can also get an @No-Spam
email address with full send/receive email capabilities. You can have as
much space as you require for your site. The only catch is that it should
be somewhat related to astronomy.
How much? That's the best part. It's free! Why is it free? I dunno, why
not? It takes a minimal amount of effort on my side to set you up and I
enjoy this type of thing so why charge people? The site has never been
about making money or commercializing anything. I can even provide some
assistance to those of you who are not site creation friendly.
So if you are interested please contact me OFF LIST.
Thanks for your time,
Rob
