In my experience, the higher the better, up to a point. First, the seeing
must support it. In my experience, this is the single most critical
limitation. I personally cannot see the "central dot" or observe its
meanderings when the seeing isn't really good. Next there's image
brightness. I typically take the magnification as high as I can while
preserving a reasonably observable image.
