There was a Sky and Telescope article about this a year or two
ago. Blue moon is neither a particularly old term (pretty much
defined this century), nor a terribly precisely defined one.
S&T even seems to be responsible for one of the many definitions
(though I forget which one).
It's all very unclear. I'd recomend reading the S&T article, and
the follow up article that argued with the first one that was
published the next month :-)
