Public observing session on the grounds at Houge Park. Families welcome;
no reservations needed.

constellations rise in the east.

Ring), M8 (The Lagoon Nebula), M22 (Globular in Sagittarius), M17 (The
Swan Nebula), M27 (The Dumbbell Nebula), Alberio
Hello: M15, Eta Cassiopeia, The Andromeda Galaxy, ET Cluster (NGC 457),
and Saturn
Saturn rises at 9:17 and will get high enough over the muck (about 11 PM)
before the star party is over.

B) Ground Breaking Ceremony at Houge Park, Sat 10/13/01, 11:00 AM - 1:00
PM
This Saturday, the Friends of Houge Park will be hosting a celebration of
the construction of a new playground in the park. All users of the park
have been asked to set up booths. The SJAA will have the Club Solar Scope
(Hydrogen-Alpha) there along with other scopes showing the sun in white
light or other objects of opportunity (Maybe the Moon or Jupiter). We also
will have posters describing all the club activities, along with
membership forms and copies of the Ephemeris. Stop on by to see
everything the Park has to offer or bring a scope to share views with the
public.

SJAA Ephemeris Editors Mojo and Jane will be running the 30" Scope up at
the Fremont Peak Observatory while other SJAA members will have their

George Coyne, S.J., noted American astronomer and director of the Vatican
Observatory in Rome,

understanding. He also is an astronomy professor at the University of
Arizona.

Public Lecture: Mars on Earth
Sponsored by: UC Observatories/Lick Observatory and UCSC
Pascal Lee, a planetary scientist at the SETI Institute in Mountain View,
will give a free public lecture on Thursday, October 18, at the University
of California, Santa Cruz. The lecture, "Mars on Earth: Polar Research and
Human Missions to Mars," will take place at 8 p.m. in Classroom Unit 2 on
the UCSC campus. Lee's lecture, presented by the UCSC Astronomy and
Astrophysics Department and UC Observatories/Lick Observatory, is part of
the Halliday Lecture Series, made possible through the generous support of
John and Layne Halliday to promote public awareness and appreciation for
astronomy and astrophysics.
