Tell me about it. That was also one of my objects for the evening. :-(
I also had a fun time hunting Herschel II's from my backyard. Mostly a few
non-descript open clusters and one faint Perseus galaxy. They must look
better from a dark sky and a telescope larger than Professor Plum, my
homemade 8" dob, cause they were pretty poor from here. The only way I was
sure I was even on the right spot a few times was because I brought the
laptop out with me and was able to match fields star for star. Still, it was
FUN! :-)
