Albert:
Are there any plotted objects on the SA 2000 that simply can't be seen? I'm
thinking of some of the larger nebulous regions, for example.

Subject: [TAC] Herschel 400 completion time, interesting non-Messier
OC's, etc.
I didn't set out to complete the H400, but I completed it within less than
1-1/2 years. My goal was to observe everything plotted in Sky Atlas 2K above
a reasonable declination. My SA2000 project is essentially done and
completing the H400 list was a natural consequence. I checked off a large
fraction of the H400-II list as well. In the original edition, only one H400
object was missing. It was added in the recent edition. So, I'm sure the
H400 can be completed within a year.
I personally wouldn't recommend sketching all objects on the H400 list. For
that matter, I don't recommend hunting down everything on the list. A large
fraction are fairly uninteresting in my 12.5" scope and you miss so much by
jumping to only those objects. Using the SA2000 as a guide, I covered much
more of the sky, and found much more interesting objects, including objects
not plotted.
I think there is merit to compiling a list of interesting non-Messier OC's.
I would add other objects as well. In fact, I have started such a list. My
goal is to indicate what are interesting objects viewed through a 12.5"
scope. I created the list by reviewing my observing notes. Next, I plan to
revisit each object to make sure it belongs on the list.
