0119+08 SUPERNOVA 1999cx IN NGC 524 IN PISCES
We have been informed by the Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams (IAU
Circular 7458) that C. Yu, M. Modjaz, and W. D. Li, University of California
at Berkeley, on behalf of the Lick Observatory Supernova Search, discovered
an apparent supernova on July 17.5 UT in NGC 524 at approximate unfiltered
CCD magnitude 14.5 using the 0.8-m Katzman Automatic Imaging Telescope (KAIT).
They also imaged the apparent supernova on July 18.4 UT at approximate
unfiltered CCD magnitude 14.3. A KAIT image of the same field taken on 1998
Aug. 31.4 showed nothing at the position of SN 1999cx down to approximate
magnitude 19.5.
The position of the new supernova, which is located 23" west and 109.3"
south of the nucleus of NGC 524, is reported as:
R.A. = 01h 24m 46.15s Decl. = +09 degrees 30' 30.9" (equinox 1999.0)
An AAVSO 'f' scale Preliminary chart of NGC 524 showing SN 1999cx has been
posted on the AAVSO web site. (http://charts.aavso.org/PRELIM/PSC/NGC_524/)
Please use this chart to observe 0119+08 SN 1999CX and report your
observations to AAVSO Headquarters. Please be sure to indicate which
comparison stars you used to make your observations.
Congratulations to C. Yu, M. Modjaz, and W. D. Li, and the rest of the KAIT
team on their discovery!

Clear skies,
