I'm not sure how far you were hoping to drive, but you're going to have to
drive at more than an hour out of Berkeley to get to reasonably dark skies.
An 80-90 minutes will get you to Lake Sonoma (between Healdsburg and
Cloverdale on 101), which typically has darker skies than Coe or Fremont Peak
(close to mag 6.5, except for a light dome in the SSE).
If you're looking for a larger group of observers, though, you can still make
the drive to Coe in 90-100 minutes from Berkeley. Other possible options
with easy access on star party nights (besides Coe, Fr. Pk, Pacheco) include
Mt. Diablo (Mt. Diablo Astronomical Society), Mt. Tamalpais (San Francisco
Amateur Astronomers), Del Valley reservoir (East Bay TAC), Hidden Hollow
Observatory east of Mt. Hamilton (Tri-Valley club).
