There were fairly regular articles with plans for making your own in
Sky&Telescope in the early '70s. I have one that was based on such a
design published in '71. Got a friend (and now wife) who was looking for
an electronics class project to build it for me. Just used it yesterday
at Del Valle to track Jupiter and Saturn. Very steady seeing allowed
lots of detail to be visible in the cloud bands of both planets. The GRS
seemed a little more prominent than I've seen it recently.
I'm also surprised to hear of reliability problems with the Mototrack -
thought they had a good reputation.
